What is this?
Aapeli.0m.fi is a preservation project. Its purpose is to keep the games of the Finnish game site Aapeli playable in current web browsers.
Background
Aapeli was a Finnish online game site, later also known as Playray and Playforia. It was run by the Finnish company Playforia Inc. Its games included Minigolf, Cannons (Tykkipeli), Pool (Kasipallo) and Bubbles (Poks). The games ran as Java and Flash applets, which current browsers no longer support. Playforia closed its site on 7 January 2019.
What the project does
- Preserves recovered original game clients with their graphics and sounds.
- Runs the original Java games in the browser with the CheerpJ runtime and the Flash games with the Ruffle emulator.
- Reimplements game servers that were not preserved, so that multiplayer games work.
- Documents the restoration work, compatibility changes and known limitations.
The browser version of Minigolf is a reimplementation of the original game rather than the original client. Not every game works exactly as it did in the original service. Restoration status varies from game to game, and some features are missing.
Not commercial
This is not a commercial project. The site has no advertisements and no paid features, and nothing is sold. The taatelit and chips on the site exist only within the site and have no monetary value.
The project is not affiliated with Playforia Inc. or the original authors of the games. The rights to the games belong to their original owners. If you hold rights to this content and want to discuss it, you can reach the maintainer with the Report a bug button at the bottom of any page.
